Housing in Lyon Confluence
The construction is divided into seven distinct blocks which are connected by the apartments’ terraces. This scheme creates direct links with the park, a key space on the site. Each apartment enjoys four different aspects and natural light in all the rooms.
The seven blocks are staggered: three are set closer to the park, offering lateral views of the Saône; and four are set a little way back and have a supplementary floor providing access to the roof terraces.
The building consists of ‘overlaid houses’, accessed via large terraces. Beams spanning 6.8 metres free the apartments from any inner framework.
Exposed unfinished concrete is the only material, responding to the fractured geometry and giving the entire construction a monolithic, massive character. The appearance of the matt material and timber woodwork and shutters dialogues with the tones in the park.
This project was awarded the prestigious French architecture prize, the Équerre d’Argent in 2010.
